Eligibility: This Wilson Center funded opportunity is open to all registered Pace students (undergraduate, graduate and international students) that are graduating in Dec. 2025 OR later.

About the Employer:  BioBus is a non profit organization for science outreach and education, based primarily in New York City. Our mission is to help K-12 and college students in New York City discover, explore, and pursue science. We focus on students excluded from the scientific community due to factors such as race, gender, economic status, and physical access. We have a community-driven approach, becoming part of the thriving communities in both Harlem and Manhattan's Lower East Side, and we use our
community and mobile labs (BioBases and BioBuses) to host science programming. This position is open for both our Harlem location (based on West 129th Street) and our Lower East Side Location (based near West Houston Street).

Position Overview: The Junior Scientist: Research and Teaching internship will work in a highly collaborative science research and education environment in a cohort of college mentors. They will work with BioBus scientists, other college students, and high school students to design and implement a research project rooted in local issues, such as
environmental justice, ecology, and green infrastructure. Findings from projects will be presented back to the community as part of local science research symposia. Interns will practice science communication skills by teaching Mobile Lab Programs on the BioBus and at the Harlem BioBase and offsite programs at local community centers.

Responsibilities Include but are not limited to: 

  • Mentor high school students in science research programs; collaborate in designing and implementing an authentic science research project
  • Present findings at local student research symposia
  • Assist BioBus scientists in teaching mobile and community lab programs
  • Receive science communication, mentorship and pedagogy training
  • Generate curriculum or curriculum/support material to be used in BioBus programs
     

Preferred Skills: 

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at Pace University
  • Be available for in-person programs up to five days per week, primarily in Harlem, but also in other NYC neighborhoods
  • Demonstrated engagement with STEM (science major, STEM work-study, lab research, participation in community science)
  • Desire to develop leadership, mentorship and teaching skills
  • Genuine interest in scientific discovery and have an interest in working with younger students to cultivate their scientific curiosity
  • Experience working with younger children is a plus

**This internship is funded by the Helene & Grant Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Pace University, the intern hired for this position will make a full-time commitment for 8 weeks, working no more than 35 hours each week, a total of 280 hours*
