Position Overview: The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is seeking a motivated intern to gain hands-on experience in government and community relations. This internship provides an opportunity to engage with experienced professionals and work on transportation infrastructure projects that contribute meaningful impacts to keep the region moving by air, land, rail and sea. The intern will support Government & Community Relations' New York team and report to the Director. The internship will include assisting on a variety of small- and large-scale projects. In addition to cultivate technical writing, meetings, team building skills and opportunity for students to gain exposure to a first-class transportation agency.
Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:
• Assist with research and data collection and compile findings.
• Attend meetings with internal departments, external stakeholders, government agencies and elected officials.
• Draft correspondence, briefings, presentations, and communications materials.
• Participate in facility visits, tours and community outreach events
• Create, develop and update outreach materials
• Support with administrative and operational tasks.
• Assist on special projects and perform other duties as assigned.
Preferred Skills:
• Strong written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
• Understanding of government process at city, state and federal, including legislative process.
• Prior experience in government, policy or community relations.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
• Self-motivated, driven and has genuine interest in contributing to the success of the New York region.
• Comfortable working with a range of stakeholders such as elected officials, community members and Port Authority staff.
• A willingness to travel within NYC as needed.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
The Ideal Candidates is:
Someone who is: passionate about public service; willing to learn; and interested in contributing to the success of the New York-New Jersey region. Interest in transportation is a plus, but not required.
**This internship is funded by the Helene & Grant Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Pace University, the intern hired for this position will make a full-time commitment for 8 weeks, working no more than 35 hours each week, a total of 280 hours*
