Education Intern - Community Impact Summer Internship 2024

ATTENTION PACE STUDENTS:  This paid Summer 2024 opportunity is provided by Pace University through its Community Impact Funded Internship Program to support our students and the communities we serve. It’s open to all enrolled Pace students, including undergraduate, graduate, and international students.

Under this program, full-time internships are provided by host organizations selected by Pace University Career Services staff. The compensation is $19.00 per hour. The maximum amount of money a student can make under this program in 2024 is $6,000.00.

Students must be enrolled at Pace University during the entire length of their internship, and NOT graduating before December 2024. If a student leaves Pace or graduates before the estimated end of their internship, the internship will end immediately.

The position might require you to report to a work site, work remotely, or work a hybrid schedule.

  • Be a currently enrolled Pace student (undergraduate, graduate, and international students), graduating Dec 2024 or later.

Once the application deadline closes, the host organization will review all applications submitted and select those candidates they wish to interview virtually. After the interviews are completed, the host organization will make their selections. Career Services will then inform selected students of their internship offer(s).

Brief description: The Waterfront Alliance is a coalition of more than 1,100 organizations with ties to our regional waterways. Our mission is to build, transform, revitalize, and protect accessible waterfronts for all communities, together. We are seeking a seasonal waterfront educator to provide direct instruction for our Estuary Explorers environmental education and public programs.

Working under the supervision of the education program manager, the education intern will be responsible for engaging with partners, students, and the public at schools, community organizations, and tabling events, and leading outdoor waterfront field labs (focused on marine science and coastal resilience) with students participating in the Estuary Explorers program. Work will take place outside the office (at schools, at community organizations, at outdoor events, etc.) on weekdays and weekends, at locations throughout the five boroughs.

Responsibilities:

  • Participate in trainings led by the Education Program Manager to learn about the curriculum/pedagogy.
  • Instruct water quality testing lessons with students as part of the Estuary Explorers field lab, as well as lead discussion around climate change, coastal resilience, sustainability, and civic engagement (this includes lifting buckets of harbor water; educational content training may be provided).
  • Assist with tabling events by speaking with the public, distributing materials, and leading activity demonstrations.
  • Help with educational activities including preparation of waterfront sites for student and teacher visits, engaging in group discussions with students, and the creation of educational materials.,
  • Manage access to waterfront sites for workshops, including permissions, directions, amenities, and weather contingency plans.
  • Maintain clean and organized workshop supplies.  

 

Who would be perfect for this job (qualifications):

  • Experience in youth and/or adult education or environmental programming, school-based programming, experiential education and/or equivalent educational background 
  • Comfortable working outdoors and available for regular onsite presence at waterfront locations throughout New York City.
  • Willingness to lead programs solo and/or with another educator.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to prioritize competing tasks.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of constituents. 
  • Ability to handle occasional stressful (public-facing) situations with professionalism and courtesy.
  • First Aid and CPR certification preferred.
  • Willing to comply with a background check.

 

Preferred start and end dates (Not to exceed 9 weeks): May – August (flexible)
