ATTENTION PACE STUDENTS: This paid Summer 2024 opportunity is provided by Pace University through its Community Impact Funded Internship Program to support our students and the communities we serve. It’s open to all enrolled Pace students, including undergraduate, graduate, and international students.
Under this program, full-time internships are provided by host organizations selected by Pace University Career Services staff. The compensation is $19.00 per hour. The maximum amount of money a student can make under this program in 2024 is $6,000.00.
Students must be enrolled at Pace University during the entire length of their internship, and NOT graduating before December 2024. If a student leaves Pace or graduates before the estimated end of their internship, the internship will end immediately.
The position might require you to report to a work site, work remotely, or work a hybrid schedule.

Brief description:
Gotham Park, a new public green space located at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan, is seeking a Horticulture and Sustainability Intern to support public programs related to environmental stewardship, the design, planting and maintenance of new urban green spaces, nature-based climate resiliency solutions, community environmental education and volunteer engagement initiatives. The Horticulture and Sustainability Intern will support Gotham Park’s Chief Operating Officer, Program Coordinator and executive team in the coordination, planning, delivery and management (including leading volunteers and high school interns) of Gotham Park’s environmental and horticultural programming initiatives. The Intern will receive a valuable hands-on learning experience in sustainable urban horticultural design and maintenance and public environmental engagement.
Responsibilities:
- Assist the Chief Operating Officer with the garden design, plant selection and order scheduling of new native plants to be planted in Gotham Park’s recently established native pollinator-friendly gardens.
- Assist the Chief Operating Officer and Program Coordinator with the coordination of free environmental educational programming and gardening and clean-up volunteer events, including communications, logistics, partner coordination, registrations and staffing support.
- Assist the Program Coordinator with tracking of environmental program-related data, including registrations, attendance, program evaluations (i.e., surveys) (working knowledge of Eventbrite and Salesforce a plus).
- Support documentation of these programs including photography and tracking of key impact metrics, such as numbers of native plants planted and maintained, varieties of pollinators and other wildlife supported, estimated volume of stormwater diverted, etc.
- Perform weekly (or up to 3x per week) hands-on, horticulturally related tasks in a public garden setting including planting, watering, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing, propagating and pest control.
- Assist the Chief Operating Officer and Program Coordinator in facilitating volunteer events for gardening, site cleanup and beautification, including plant orders, placement and materials set up ahead of volunteer arrival, volunteer training and volunteer assistance.
- Assist in the facilitation of environmental research and monitoring activities, data collection and data analysis in coordination with Pace University Environmental Sciences Department and Urban Assembly Maker Academy Science Department.
- Learn plant identification and plant attributes, as appropriate, and engage with the public by answering general questions about the gardens at Gotham Park.
- Manage program gear – organize, distribute and store materials for programs when applicable, and work with the Chief Operating Officer on managing new equipment or materials purchases when necessary.
Who would be perfect for this job (qualifications):
The ideal candidate would be enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Biology or a related field, preferably with coursework and/or experience in the following: horticulture, sustainable landscape design, permaculture, urban gardening, soil health practices, environmental monitoring, urban studies, youth and/or older adult engagement, and/or outdoor education.
We are looking for a candidate who is organized, a self-starter, a strong communicator, able to effectively manage varied tasks. The candidate should have experience and familiarity in youth, older adult and intergenerational program implementation and ability to manage and support a diverse and multigenerational group of volunteers.
Preferred candidates should demonstrate some or all of the following:
- Experience with urban gardening
- Ability to communicate and organize effectively – both verbally and in writing
- Strong self-motivation and time management skills
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and as part of a team
- Strong computer skills – with proficiency in Canva, Mailchimp, Microsoft Office, Google Suite and/or Eventbrite
- Familiarity with the neighborhoods surrounding our site, including Chinatown, Two Bridges, the South Street Seaport, the Lower East Side, Little Italy and the Financial District, and experience, comfort, and passion in working with our local multigenerational and diverse community
- Experience in volunteer recruitment and management
- Experience working cooperatively with community groups and stakeholders
- Familiarity with and excitement for public space development, sustainable horticultural design, urban green space stewardship, nature-based solutions for climate resilience, public environmental education and youth, older adult, and intergenerational engagement.
