Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I had the opportunity to participate in a variety of firm events such as community service, presentations from firm leadership, and an international intern conference in Disney World.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to spend more time with other interns, but I enjoyed getting to know the other people on my team.

Advice

When you have questions on a project, do as much work as you can without asking the question, compile all of your questions in a list, and then ask them all at once. This mitigates the amount of times you will need to ask for help, and your organization will greatly benefit your team.

Audit Intern

June - August 2019 • San Diego, CA

What I liked

I appreciate how everyone was so welcoming and willing to help me with all the questions I had. They had all been in my shoes before and were willing to help me with anything I needed in regards to school and EY.

What I wish was different

I genuinely do not think there is anything I would want to be different. Its one of the best places in the country to work.

Advice

Get ahead of the curve. Apply to the SLPs and internships early in your college career so you are not scrambling for a full-time position.

Risk Advisory Intern

June - August 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I liked the fact that even though EY is huge company, they did their best to connect you to as much people as possible. For example you had mentors at various levels within the company (ex. entry level all the way to partners).

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish that was different is if I could have gotten to travel for a project because I think that would have been a really cool experience. Besides that, I would have changed nothing!

Advice

I believe the only piece of advice I would share to individuals doing this internship is just to have an open mind. In this field of work you will continuously face new/challenging types of work, so in order to be successful you must be wiling to tackle anything.

Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

Really great company and great people to work with. Had a wonderful experience getting to interact face-to-face with clients. They actually taught me real on-the-job skills that will be incredibly useful.

What I wish was different

N/A

Advice

Take advantage of people you know. Don't shy away from making connections and talking to people about your experiences. I was the only intern from Gordon, so I really had to take advantage of putting myself out there to make connections -- because they didn't come naturally to me.

Assurance Intern

June - August 2019 • Iselin, NJ

What I liked

I liked the exposure I had to the audit field. Prior to this internship, I had no idea what audit really was and did not take an audit course. Everyone on my team was always willing to give me work that kept me busy, but helped me learn, as well as answer any questions I had. Everyone's internship at a Big Four is different, but I was fortunate to be placed on a client that had a June 30 year-end and therefore assisted the team during busy season. I got to see the components of an audit, status meetings, and conversations with the client. I learned a lot throughout this internship, and have been able to apply it to my audit course now! Disney was also a huge plus to the internship. I really connected with the other interns at the Iselin office there!

What I wish was different

I am grateful that I was placed on a year-end engagement, but I do wish I had a little bit more time to go to some of the intern events and network with the employees and other interns there!

Advice

Be engaged and ask questions!!! This is so huge in any internship. The staff know that you do not really know what you are doing or looking at when given an assignment. By asking questions and being engaged, it shows initiative and that you are willing and able to learn. It helped me gain the trust of my team, which lead me to take control of tasks such as updating test of controls, testing journal entries, and various accounts, such as Cash, A/P, and Prepaid, during busy season!

Valuation, Modeling, & Economics Summer Analyst

June - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I loved the lean structure of the teams I was working in. There was great exposure to senior employees (partners, managers). Autonomy was given to me on all of my projects with a culture focused on self-learning for an involved experience- there was no shortage of resources for this, and plenty of training. The work itself was very technical and rewarding, I learned how to build DCF and WACC models and got plenty of time to get familiar with research software (Bloomberg, CapIQ, Thomson ONE)

What I wish was different

The self-learning culture is a dual edged sword. Throughout the entire summer, I was rarely checked in on and had to go to lengths at times to get staffed on an engagement so I wasn't sitting around. There also was a poorly placed case study that was due at the end of the summer, when it should have been the first task given to interns; it was more of a precursor to the work we did over the summer than it was something that would solidify what we did at the end. It seemed like my group was understaffed (full time staff were always in a fire drill) and the pay could be better for the type of work being done.

Advice

Always pursue more work/learning material and try to get your hands on as wide of a variety of projects as possible. This way you can discover your strengths and weaknesses, and tailor which engagements you choose to pursue.
